What is Augmented reality (AR)?
Augmented Reality (AR) is a way of bringing digital content into the real world. AR overlays digital media onto the real world around the viewer. AR can overlay the real-world objects with texts, images, videos, animations, etc. The process is quick as soon as the input gets received from the input devices. AR works in many platforms such as mobile and headsets. Google Glass was an early example of a device using AR technology. AR is currently making great strides in various sectors such as; medical, aviation, gaming and the military.
What is Virtual reality (VR)?
Virtual Reality removes the viewer from their surroundings and places them in an artificially created environment. VR is a computer-generated interactive simulated immersive environment that creates experiences that are usually based on fantasy. This emerging technology also allows for the experiencing of sensations though controllers. The most common form of VR technology is the VR headsets such as HTC Vive and Oculus Rift.
What is Mixed Reality (MR)?
Mixed reality is a blend of physical and virtual worlds that includes both real and computer-generated objects. The two worlds are “mixed” together to create a realistic environment. A user can navigate this environment and interact with both real and virtual objects. Mixed reality is closer to augmented reality than virtual reality. Like MR, AR uses a real environment. It “augments” reality by overlaying virtual objects on top of it, such as a Snapchat filter. However, the user cannot interact directly with virtual objects. For example, AR has the capability to display a virtual 3D box on a physical table. With MR, the user might be able to pick up and open the box.
AR- and VR-based guidance solutions for the operating theater, enhanced medical imaging, immersion therapy, and AR interfaces for medical equipment.
VR-based property tours for the real estate industry and virtual travel experiences (hotel tours, travel information, holiday booking interfaces).
On-the-job education through the interactive simulation of workflow operations (equipment assembly, software installation, medical treatment).
